Through the more than seventy activities presented in this book, parents will learn the tools and strategies they need to understand how to introduce signing and build their child's sign and word vocabulary.Using ASL signs and Signing Smart with hearing infants and toddlers has many benefits, including:-reducing frustration and tantrums-allowing children to express what they need or want-facilitating speaking-fostering communication and promoting learningBy using these practical, easy-to-learn methods, parents and babies-from as young as five months old to preschool age-can "converse" through signs at mealtime, bath time, playtime, or anytime.Featuring the Signing Smart Illustrated Dictionary, with 130 signs.
I tried to do sign language with my older child, but didn't know how to catch her interest. This book is amazing! We are using it with our second child, and at 13 months old she has used over 45 signs to communicate with us. When she falls down she is able to say "I bumped my head" and "It hurts" with two signs! Not only does this book teach a few dozen signs in their dictionary, it tells you multiple daily-activity games to incorporate signs, and helps you learn to recognize when your baby is signing back. There are excellent tips, like to balance signs you want your baby to know (like eat, more, and hurt), with signs your baby wants to know (like duck, light, fan, bear, and book). That's the likely reason my older child wasn't interested in signing: because I only used signs that interested me as her parent, and overlooked the things she was interested in talking about. We all want to understand our babies, and this book helps a lot with that!
