Behind the Mask,Beneath the Glitter is an intimate and entertaining work that lays bare Dr. Robin T.W. Yuan's contrarian philosophy regarding cosmetic surgery. Dr. Yuan goes inside-the-mind and behind-the-scenes of his cosmetic practice to reveal important concepts and misconceptions that drive this popular field. Of the book, plastic surgeon Dr. Joseph Murray, Nobel Laureate, says,""I read your book with interest and was impressed by your insight into the essence of Cosmetic Surgery.... You have led a remarkable life of experiences." Dr. Leon Morgenstern, Emeritus Professor of Surgery, UCLA, writes of Dr. Yuan's book: "... interesting, literate, entertaining, informative and well-written... I got a great deal of pleasure reading them. There is much surgical and medical wisdom than just plastic surgery."
I am not using my name because of the sensitivity of my review. I am 54 and have been casually considering cosmetic surgery for about 4 years. I then discovered my husband was cheating on me with a 40 year old. Almost a textbook "male mid-life crisis" chapter! Because I am such a bold person I confronted her at her home and had a conversation with her. What I discovered was she really only had 10 years on me. I am better looking and clearly a better person. So, then came Dr. Yuan's book. It's like God put it in my hands. Reading the book really helped me to look inside and ask myself "why do I want to do this?" " Is it for me?" "am I competing with a younger woman" "am I trying to hold onto my marriage" ect... The first few chapters really helped me look at theses questions and then the last chapter "The twelve sacred know-no's.." brought it all back and tied it all up. So, incredibly helpful for me and I believe anyone considering plastic surgery. The chapters. in-between really helped me choose my surgeon. I had started following a local, handsome , charismatic surgeon on TikToc and instagram and boy was I getting sucked it! It was all so exciting and alluring. That is what I wanted, this surgeon is who HAD to be my surgeon. I was hooked. But, luckily I was still reading Dr. Yuan's book. One thing he really writes about is getting to know your surgeon and him listening to you, not presuming what you want and having a relationship of sorts with your doctor and feeling comfortable with someone who is going to cut you open and change some aspect of how you look. That is HUGE!.. This local surgeon who is all the rage on TikTok is I am sure a wonderful surgeon and does great work and was recommended by my dermatologist. BUT, after I emailed him photos of my face, I received a quote and was asked to pay $1,000. non-refundable deposit for a zoom meeting (which I later read from reviewers lasts on average 7 minutes). Then I would have to pay 20% non refundable deposit to secure a date for surgery a year from now and If I wanted to be on a waitlist for earlier 40%. All this without meeting him in person. You can see the doctor face to face in person the day before surgery and that's it. He must be so amazing and busy that this is the way he does it. But am I comfortable, absolutely not. It's my face! Dr. Yuan really emphasize on the doctor/patient relationship which can not happen in a 7 minute zoom meeting and just looking at photos. I am only 2 hours away from Dr. Yuan and would use him for my cosmetic surgery but through his book I was able to find a local surgeon who has seen me in person now three times and I still have a pre-op appointment for any final questions in person. When I talked about this book and how it has answered so many questions for me my new doctor said I need to still ask him any questions I had. That made me feel so good because he wants to hear from me, what my questions are and he, my surgeon wants to be the one to answer them. Thank you Dr. Yuan for writing such a thought provoking book and I am now starting your next book, "The Skinny on Marriage". Which is an obvious next step for me. My husband and I are working on our marriage and he wants to read this next book with me as part of our therapy. Watch for my next review.
