All in all this is a better purchase than a similar quality western style gauge. You should realize it's a 10$ gauge, therefore quality will vary wildly and that it requires fettling. I have sharpened the blade and chamfered a wedge's and stem's heads, so they don't mushroom, also removed some fuzzy bits here and there. The blade is just a stamped piece of steel, it's hard and cuts well soft and hard woods. You would also need a small hammer to adjust and tighten the gauge, finger tightening won't work. It doesn't matter if a stem or a blade is not square or perpendicular, the only important aspect is that a stem can be tightened and keeps its setting.
