Most environmental rating scales examine classrooms from a typical perspective such as how many blocks are in the block center, and what types of blocks and accessories are available for children. The Rating Observation Scale for Inspiring Environments (ROSIE) encourages teachers to look at their classrooms from the perspective of important research-based elements such as color, texture, and positioning of displays. I have used this rating observation scale as a supplement to ECERS and as a way to prepare for re-accreditation. Using the ROSIE helps my staff to create spaces that are less institutional and more homelike. I especially like the attention to elements such as light, sound, and olfactory as well as visual clutter because these elements and ideas are often overlooked in typical classrooms.
