Given Dust Moth's dynamic range, it's hardly surprising that they've been able to share the stage with such diverse bands as Minus the Bear, Pelican, and Tombs. Following a west coast run with cerebral metallurgists Kayo Dot, the band reformulated their line-up and began constructing the nine songs that would comprise Scale. The album was recorded by Matt Bayles (Pearl Jam, ISIS, Mastodon) at Red Store Studio in Seattle and mastered by Ed Brooks at RFI. The Mylene Sheath is proud to release Scale worldwide on July 22nd, 2016.
Deftones interpreted by shoegaze through a doom haze brought to you by Pallbearer punctuated by Esben and the Witch vocals? Yes please. I know it's a little hackneyed to describe music through references to other material, but this is what also makes sense if you haven't heard it before. Each song picks up on pieces from each of these sounds which makes it all seem very familiar, but also singular. There are elements to some of the chord progressions that take you to the ends of something very dark - is this new Pallbearer? -, but then turn in another direction. The third track, Night Wave, does this in a few places and it works so well while the single Lift starts out in in stoner territory, but then gives that the finger on a detour through early Muse. My favorite piece is Space Legs. Absurdly catchy and infectious. I've listened to it on repeat all morning. I can't wait to blast it in the car. So if you are looking for something new that stays firmly grounded in the darker side of rock music but finds its way in psychedelic and dreamy shoegaze territory, then you need to be enjoying this album.
